Fourteen inches of sand corduroy, with a plaited rope for a tail.

The body is cut-pile corduroy and the ribs run the length of it, so the light catches it in lines rather than as one flat surface. The muzzle is a separate panel in a coarser woven cloth. The eyes and the nose are stitched and appliquéd, not glued on.

The tail is rope, plaited and knotted at the end. It is the part a dog will find first and the part that gives, which is the idea.

Fourteen and a half inches nose to tail. Large enough to be a thing on the floor rather than a thing in a basket, and quiet enough in color that it does not announce itself from across a room.

There is a squeaker in the body. It answers a squeeze.

On chewingThis is a play toy. It is not chew-proof, and nothing soft is. The rope tail will fray before the body does. If your dog opens things for sport, this will last an afternoon. If your dog carries and shakes things, it will last years.

Care

Washing

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and press the water out rather than wringing it. Air dry away from direct heat. Corduroy flattens under heat and does not come back.

The rope tail

Rope frays with use, which is normal. Trim loose strands rather than letting them lengthen, and retire the toy once the tail has worked free of the body.

When to retire it

Check the seams every few weeks. Once the shell is open, take it away — the fill and the squeaker are not meant to be swallowed. A toy that has been opened is finished, however much your dog disagrees.
