Two small woven balls. One open, one wound, both light enough to cross a room.
The first is rattan, bent and left open, so it rattles faintly and catches on a claw the way a dry leaf does. An inch and a half across.
The second is sisal wound tight, with a feather plume set into the top. Slightly heavier, so it travels further when it is hit.
Neither has a battery, a squeaker or a light in it. A cat bats one under a sofa and spends ten minutes getting it back, which is the entire proposition.

Living with them
When to retire them
Rattan splinters as it ages and sisal unwinds. Once either has loose ends a cat can pull free, take it away. These are small enough to be a hazard once they start coming apart.
The feather
It is a real feather and it will not last as long as the ball does. That is expected. The ball keeps working without it.
